The benefits of becoming a resident in Spain

If you're considering becoming a resident in Spain, you'll naturally want to know what the benefits are. This blog post outlines some of the advantages you might encounter in Spain.

When am I required to become a resident?

You are required to become a resident if you:

  • Stay in Spain for more than 183 days per year
  • Your main economic interests in Spain are (work/business)
  • Your family lives in Spain
  • Please note: If you are staying for less than 183 days, you are not officially a resident, but you can apply for an NIE number for things like buying a house.

The Spanish climate

One of Spain's advantages is, of course, its warm climate, with over 300 days of sunshine a year. The mild winters make outdoor living much more accessible than in Northern Europe. However, the climate can also have some drawbacks. Summers can get extremely hot. If you want to experience the climate's pros and cons for yourself, it's recommended to experience the different seasons. This way, you'll quickly discover whether the climate is truly yours.

Healthcare in Spain

If you become a resident, you are entitled to the Spanish public health system (Sistema Nacional de Salud). Once you are a resident, you can access medical services, GP visits, and hospital treatments. You can also use private hospitals and clinics with private care. The quality of care is generally high. A disadvantage in this case can be a language barrier, which can sometimes be very difficult in medical situations, especially in smaller villages where English is less widely spoken.

Employment

The job market differs from what you're used to in Northern Europe. Unemployment is in different sectors, and salaries are often lower. Because Spain is so touristy, there are many opportunities in tourism, hospitality, real estate, and online/remote work. The better you speak Spanish, the better your chances in the job market.

Living expenses

A plus for most people in becoming a resident is the lower cost of living, including groceries, dining out, and rent. This does, of course, depend on where you live; in larger cities, prices can still be higher. Energy costs can also rise significantly in certain seasons, such as in the summer due to the use of air conditioning.

Lifestyle and culture

Spain is known for its relaxed lifestyle, with an emphasis on togetherness, sumptuous meals, and taking time to enjoy life. The pace is slower, and work is often adapted to life. This also means that administrative processes often run much slower than you're used to. Nevertheless, this culture fosters warm connections, close-knit communities, and a sense of connection. Cohesion is particularly strong in villages and small towns.

Favorable tax conditions

As a resident, you can benefit from several tax advantages. Spain has a broad network of tax treaties with other countries to prevent double taxation. Depending on your situation, this means you'll pay less tax on your income. However, keep in mind that if you receive income from abroad, you'll also have to pay taxes. This means you must file tax returns in both Spain and your home country. If you decide to remain a non-resident but own property or earn income in Spain, you may face higher tax rates.
