You no longer need to have a SpTH health certificate to travel to Spain
7 Apr 2022

MADRID – Good news for anyone traveling by plane from an EU country such as the Netherlands or Belgium to Spain. From now on you no longer have to fill in a SpTH health declaration to enter the country. If you have a digital EU covid certificate and have therefore been vaccinated, tested or recovered (see below) you can now enter Spain without filling in the health declaration. If you do not have a digital EU covid certificate, you still have to fill in the SpTH form.

The entry rules for Spain have changed † From now on you don't need a SpTH health declaration more to fill in if you have the digital EU covid certificate. The digital EU covid certificate is the same as the Dutch international QR code in the CoronaCheck app ( LINK ) or in the Belgian CobvidSafe app ( LINK † In the Dutch and Belgian smartphone app you can use a QR code (that black and white strange block) to show whether you have been vaccinated, tested or recovered. In case of travel to Spain you have to create the international code.

The SpTH health certificate only applies to travelers by plane or boat and NOT for travelers with their own transport who enter Spain by land such as by car, camper, motorcycle, bicycle, etc. The own transport travelers must have a valid digital EU -have covid certificate to enter Spain. This can be checked at the Spanish border (but that rarely if ever happens).

The expiry of the requirement to complete the SpTH health declaration was published on Wednesday 6 April 2022 in the Government Gazette BOE-A-2022-5523.

Perform SpTH check

IMPORTANT: The Dutch and Belgians who use the smartphone app must request a paper or digital version because you need this to use the SpTH website to upload. In this way, the system in Spain can check whether you have a valid digital EU Covid certificate. You can upload that via THIS WEBSITE where you must enter the following:

  1. The date of the trip to Spain (choose from calendar)
  2. The country you come from (choose from list, Netherlands or Belgium)
  3. Then choose the province you are traveling from (choose from list)
  4. Uploading your digital EU covid certificate (via the Select file button) This can be a PDF, PNG, JPG, SVG, GIF or JPEG file.
  5. After that, as a spam check, say you are 'human' and click the button that says 'Validate'

If your digital EU covid certificate is subsequently considered valid, the text VALID will appear, with the recommendation to check the health situation again 72 hours before departure.

ORANGE airport signs

After arriving at the airport in Spain you must follow the signs for the ORANGE health check. There you must again show your digital EU covid certificate to the staff (this can be done via the smartphone app or the paper/digital version). Travelers who do not have a valid digital EU covid certificate must follow the signs for the BLUE health check.

The digital EU covid certificate

The digital EU Covid certificate and therefore in the Netherlands the international QR code in the CoronaCheck app or in the Belgian CobvidSafe app consists of 1 of the following 3 documents that are mandatory for travelers from 12 years old to enter Spain. Vaccination proof // Validity: Between 14 and 270 days after the last scheduled dose of the primary vaccination course was administered. After 270 days, vaccination certificates must contain a booster dose (3/3). All vaccines approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are accepted. OR Test Proof // Negative result of a pre-departure PCR test (valid 72 hours before arrival) or rapid antigen test (24 hours before arrival). The certificate of the negative test to be taken with you must state: name, number of travel document, contact details of the test institute, type of test, time and date of the test and negative result. Test results must be drawn up in Spanish, English, French or German or have an official translation in 1 of these languages. OR Recovery Proof // Proof of recovery from the COVID-19. Valid from day 11 after the first positive molecular test and up to 180 days from the sample date. The document must be issued by an authority or medical body. This must be in Spanish, English, French or German. The document must state: name, date of first positive NAAT test, type of NAAT test and country of issue.

Children under the age of 12 are exempt from submitting these certificates, but not from completing the SpTH health form and obtaining a QR code.

NOTE: If you live in Spain, we have described HERE how you can save and save your ' Certificado COVID Digital de la UE ' in the SpTH app.
