La Herradura is located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. It is the last urban coastal area of the province of Granada towards the west and borders the district of Maro, in Nerja. Nearby is the Sierra de la Almijara. La Herradura is one of the few areas on the coast of Granada that maintains a small area of unspoilt vegetation and fauna, between Cerro Gordo and Maro. It was declared a nature reserve by the regional government in the 1980s. Its surface and seabed are home to corals and endangered species. The diving centres of La Herradura are very well known and are among the most prestigious in the southern peninsula.
