The location of Rojales
Rojales is a municipality in the Spanish province of Alicante in the Valencian Community with an area of 28 km². Rojales is located just off the CV920 between Guardamar del Segura and Orihuela and is approximately 35 minutes drive from Alicante airport and 30 minutes drive from Murcia airport. The village is located inland near Guardamar del Segura on the southern Costa Blanca of Spain.
The history of Rojales
Throughout the centuries, the Segura River has shaped the history of the peoples and cultures that have lived in Rojales. The fertile lands irrigated by its waters have allowed the city to survive since the fourth millennium BC. The area also contains remains of Iberian, Roman and Arab settlements.
At the beginning of the 14th century, Rojales was defined as a town under the current name of Rojales-Roxales with the construction of an urban complex with monumental features, which would form the backbone of the districts of the municipality on both sides of the river Segura. From that moment on, Rojales would experience a flourishing development as an agricultural town.
From 1773, Rojales experienced a significant population growth thanks to the development of agriculture, an activity that was of great importance until the 19th century.
