The largest fireworks festival in South-East Spain is back on the doorstep. Every year on August 13, Spaniards and tourists come to the city of Elche. From around 11:00 PM, almost all city lights are extinguished and the festive violence can begin.
The party starts with a continuous series of avalanche arrows, dozens of which are shot into the air every second (!). This is replaced with smaller decorative fireworks and enormous shells, which provides an absolute spectacle, both for the eyes and for the ears. For about 45 minutes it is impossible to talk to the person next to you because of the deafening noise.
Just before 12 o'clock the fireworks stop and the noise turns into silence. Children from local schools sing songs for 10 minutes near the church, after which all lights in the city are turned off.
At 12 o'clock, a total of 3,000 rockets are shot simultaneously from the Basilica of Elche, which explode in the air and magically light up the entire city. For fireworks enthusiasts, this is an absolute must to see if you are in the area!
The fireworks can be seen from all places in the city. It is best to park around the L'Aljub commercial center and then walk through the park towards the Rio Vinolopo . If you'd rather not be in the middle of the crowds, any higher spot around the city is a good place to see all the fireworks displays.
