Eight beautiful beaches on the Costa del Sol
Why do so many people choose the province of Malaga as their holiday destination? Traditionally this has been for the beaches. With 161 kilometers of coastline, 325 days of sunshine a year and more than 120 beaches on the Mediterranean Sea, it is easy to imagine.
You bask in the sun with the lapping waves as background music and scents of sunburn in the air. Plenty of facilities to take your mind off things if you want to take some action. Endless beach bars, bars and restaurants to soothe the rumbling stomach. A quiet bay here, a long, wide beach there or a narrow beach hidden behind a beautiful dune section. The Costa del Sol all kinds of beaches are waiting for you. And here we give you some inspiration from east to west.
1. Playa de Maro in Nerja
Nerja is located 50 kilometers east of Málaga. Due to the mountainous hinterland, the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the coastline in this part of the province is jagged with beautiful beaches. For example, few beaches on the Costa del Sol can match the beach of Maro. It is considered one of the best beaches in Spain because of its crystal clear waters. Because it is hidden between high rocks, you can make beautiful trips by kayak to sea caves. The water is extremely clear. A fact that attracts many snorkelers and divers.
1. Playa de Burriana in Nerja
Burriana Beach is also located in the popular resort of Nerja. An idyllic spot with over 800 meters of fine golden sand. Tourists not only come here for the beautiful beach, but also for the pleasant promenade with all kinds of restaurants, terraces and shops. There is also a very diverse range of water sports for the active. Think of pedal boats, jet skiing, kayaking and even diving and snorkeling.
3. Playa la Cala del Moral in Rincon de la Victoria
Playa la Cala del Moral is a wide beach with a length of more than 1 kilometer and an average width of 40 meters. The beach is easily accessible and has plenty of facilities. For children there are playgrounds and a floating water park where they can stretch their senses. Part of the 'Senda Litoral', the path directly along the sea that follows the entire coastline of the province of Málaga, runs here. You can even walk to the city of Málaga about 10 kilometers away.
4. Playa Bil-Bil in Benalmadena
We continue to Benalmádena and arrive at the beach of Bil-Bil. It is a popular beach for the residents of this seaside resort because of its central location. The beach is about 400 meters long and 20 meters wide and contains dark and fine sand. The sea does not slope too steeply, which makes the beach also suitable for families with young children. Behind the beach is a beautiful promenade for extensive strolling. For example, walk through to the bustling Puerto Marina harbor with numerous shops, restaurants and the Sealife aquarium. You can also visit the cultural center of Bil-Bil Castle.
5. Playa del Castillo in Fuengirola Playa del Castillo is located, how could it be otherwise, at the foot of Fuengirola's Sohail Castle. This dominates the skyline of western Fuengirola from a hillside. Nearby is the mouth of the river of the same name. This is also a beautiful park where you can rent pedal boats, cross the river along a zipline, play table tennis and cycle. The large covered shopping center Miramar is also very close by. In summer, concerts and other events are organized in and around the castle. Furthermore, it is usually a quiet beach. There are also barbecues that you can rent from the municipality. The beach has been awarded a Blue Flag listing for years because of the good conditions of the water and the environment. A small part has been made suitable for dogs. If you fancy a walk, walk a few kilometers east and you'll be in the busy center of Fuengirola.
6. Artola-Cabopino Beach in Marbella
On this beach, which is located on the eastern side of the municipality of Marbella, you will experience a strong connection with nature. This is because it is beautifully hidden between a large dune and the Mediterranean Sea. The dunes have been declared a protected cultural space. The special environment provides a feeling that you are in a different world than elsewhere on the coast. The white sand and crystal clear waters make it perfect for enjoying with the family. There are nice restaurants in the marina of Cabopino.
7. Real Zaragoza Beach in Marbella
The beach of Real de Zaragoza is located 13 km from Marbella in the urbanization of the same name. With its 1,700 meters it is one of the longest beaches in the province of Málaga. All golden and fine sand. Although it is considered one of the best beaches in the area, it is not one of the usually busiest beaches along the coast. The sports enthusiast can walk with his feet through the water of 13 kilometers to the center of Marbella. Despite the fact that it is relatively quiet, you will find showers, beach bars and here and there you can rent beach beds.
8. Playa del Cristo in Estepona
This beach consists of a 700 m long bay where, since 2019, a Blue Flag has also been flying. The beach is located in the southwestern part of Estepona, next to the marina. It has dark sand and the water is clean and relatively calm. Along the beach are several playgrounds and fields with trees that provide much-needed and natural shade in the summer. It is an ideal beach for families. Due to the short distance from the center of the city, you can also enjoy a pleasant walk there.
