Spain received 2.5 million foreign tourists in January

Spain, according to the monthly figures of the Spanish Statistical Institute (INE) and Frontur will receive 2.5 million international tourists in the month of January 2022. That is 468 percent more than the foreign holidaymakers who came to Spain in the same month in 2020. The number of Dutch and Belgian tourists rose again in January.

In the month of January 2022 2,486,486 international holidaymakers came to Spain. Of these, 363,150 came from the United Kingdom, 347,955 from France, 282,280 from Germany and 208,397 from the Nordic countries. 2021 ended with 31,129,393 foreign tourists, 64.4% more than in 2020 but 62.7% less than in the pre-Covid year 2019 when there were still 83,701,011 foreign tourists.

Dutch and Belgians

If we look at the number of Dutch people, we see that 172,549 travelers have come to Spain, which is an increase of 984 percent compared to the same month in 2021 when only 15,908 Dutch people came to Spain, but that was still 164,461 Dutch in the same month in 2019 and 152,550 in 2020.

As for Belgians, 132,019 travelers came to Spain, an increase of 248 percent compared to the same month in 2021 when only 21,153 Belgians came to Spain, but that was still 121,066 Belgians in the same month in 2019 and 118,988 in 2020.

Regions

Most international tourists or travelers went to the Canary Islands with 759,765 tourists followed by Catalonia with 463,661, Andalusia with 323,896, the Valencia region with 281,261, the Madrid region with 247,982 and the Balearic Islands with 83,120 tourists.

Despite all the restrictions due to Covid-19, the majority of travelers came to Spain by plane with 2,030,198 travelers, followed by 430,127 travelers by road, 6,666 by train and 19,496 via ports.

In the first corona year (2020), 922,797 Dutch and 747,016 Belgians came to Spain, while in the second corona year (2021) these were 2,042,868 Dutch and 1,460,735 Belgian tourists. In the pre-Covid year 2019, however, 3,701,944 Dutch and 2,538,829 Belgians came to Spain.
