Tolls to be scrapped on several Spanish motorways from September 1

Spanish drivers will be able to travel to and from the coast for less from next Wednesday

The Spanish government is making several motorways in the country toll-free from Wednesday, September 1, despite a proposal to increase the number of toll roads in Spain submitted to the EU in June.
 
Around 550 kilometres of road will be free to use from next week, including stretches of two state motorways, the AP-2 and the AP-7, and sections of two motorways controlled by the regional Catalonian government, the C-32 and the C-33.
 
One 215 km section of the AP-2, which stretches between Alfajarín, in Zaragoza, and El Vendrell, in Tarragona, currently has a toll of €20.65, but this will change from next week, when drivers can use the road for free.
 
Meanwhile, the €28.85 toll on a 245 km stretch of the AP-7 (between Tarragona and La Junquera) will also be scrapped, as well as the toll on the 31 km between the Barcelona municipalities of Montmelo and Papiol.
 
The regional government in Catalonia is going to remove the toll on a 48 km stretch of the C-32 which connects Barcelona and Lloret de Mar (Gerona) and on another stretch of the C-33 which links Barcelona and Montmeló (around 15 km).
 
These motorway sections will be joining other Spanish roads which were made toll-free in 2018 and 2020; AP-1 between Álava and Burgos; AP-4 between Sevilla and Cádiz; and AP-7 between Alicante and Tarragona.
 
However, Spanish drivers could be facing an increase in the number of toll roads after 2024, according to a proposal submitted to the European Union, which aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as raise funds for road maintenance.
