Spanish tourism minister Fernando Valdes Verelst said talks with the UK in relation to digital vaccination certificates are ongoing as he appeared to break ranks with the EU. British holidaymakers will be welcomed to Spain in June, the country’s tourism minister confirmed.

Covid passports for summer holidays could be in place by the same month, with UK-EU talks to resume travel set to start in the next few days, but Spain appears to have broken ranks from the EU and made its stance clear.

"June will be the start of the recovery of tourism in Spain," tourism minister Fernando Valdes Verelst told a conference in Mexico on Tuesday."

"By then we will have a digital vaccination certificate in place and we will be able to reopen our borders.”

He added: "We are having close conversations with UK authorities and we are exchanging information on Spain’s digital system and the trial happening at our airports in May."
