A Spanish phone number, how does it work and do I need one?

A Spanish phone number, how does it work and do I need one?

If you're moving to Spain, you might be thinking about getting a new phone number. Here's everything you need to know.

Why do I need a Spanish phone number?

A Spanish number has several advantages:

1. Easier contact with local authorities and companies.

Many Spanish companies and institutions, such as banks, insurance companies, doctors, municipalities, and schools, require a local phone number. This is necessary for receiving verification codes, appointment confirmations, or for customer service.

2. Lower costs for calls and data.

A Spanish phone number gives you access to competitive rates and extensive mobile data bundles tailored to the Spanish market

3. Access to Spanish apps and digital services.

Think of banking apps, parking systems and delivery platforms, without a Spanish number this becomes a lot more complicated.

For renting or buying a property in Spain, it's also advisable to have a Spanish phone number. Rental agencies, real estate agents, and owners often communicate via WhatsApp or text message to a local number.

How do I apply for a Spanish phone number?

In Spain, it works the same as anywhere else: you find a provider you'd like to subscribe to, and then you can apply for your new SIM card. Note that applying for a subscription requires an NIE number. You'll need this number to purchase subscriptions and contracts. If you choose to purchase a prepaid card, you don't need an NIE number.

To apply for a telephone subscription, you also need to have a Spanish bank account number.

What does a Spanish phone number look like?

A Spanish phone number has 9 digits, with the country code +34. A mobile number always begins with a 6 or a 7. Landlines have a different prefix for each region in Spain.

  • Andalusia: Almeria: 950 / Malaga: 95
  • Valencian Community: 96
  • Murcia: 968

Keep your own phone number

Most providers offer to convert your current plan to a prepaid card with the same number. This way, you won't lose your number and can still use it if your phone has dual SIM cards.

Special numbers

Phone numbers 800 and 900 are free for the caller. Sometimes it's only possible to call them from a landline.

Phone numbers 901 and 902 are used by businesses, public and private entities. These charges are not free for the caller and are often not included in the mobile provider's rates.

Phone number 905 is a special number used for voting at shows and contests. The cost is per call, not per minute.

Emergency numbers

  • 112: free to call in case of all emergencies (police, ambulance, fire brigade)
  • 011: national and free for traffic and roadside assistance and accidents
  • 062: national and free to talk to the Guardia Civil
  • 1006: National and free to speak with the Spanish Civil Guard (Protección Civil)
  • 900 20 20 10: national and free for children and teenagers in case of emergency or assistance
