NIE stands for Número de Identificación de Extranjero . It is a unique tax number for non-Spanish residents who wish to carry out a legal or economic transaction in Spain. Without an NIE number , it is not possible to buy real estate, arrange utilities, or pay taxes.
You need it for, among other things:
- buying real estate in Spain.
- registration in the land registry.
- opening a Spanish bank account.

- buying a mobile phone.

Why is a NIE number required for real estate?

There are three ways to apply for a NIE number:

By starting on time, you avoid delays at the notary or with the registration of the property in the Spanish land registry. It can take several weeks to months.
